That Trumpet certainly is a nice bike, but as a first sportbike I would suggest a good old fashioned FZ600. The motor is olde worlde oil/air cooled, only spins to 10500rpm and is nigh on bulletproof. Best thing is tons were made and sold, there are a host of new and used aftermarket upgrades to play with (I have a lot on mine) they cost next to nothing and when you drop it in your garage, and if you are a squid, err noobie, you almost certainly will, there are tons of replacement parts off the shelf or on ebay to put things right.
Best of all, its a friendly little bike, that wont spit off an incompetent fool, while all the time instilling confidence so you can carry the kind of speed you need to retain to keep on par with the newer and faster machines out there. My ZX9 is a different animal, faster, sharper and a lot more intimidating in novice hands..
