I saw a Green Suzuki by the side of the road today with a sign reading "$600" on the handle bars. Turned out to be a 1982 GS550. After a quick test drive, I discovered a few things. 1) It´s very sluggish. 2) The steering was pretty quick, but then it seemed to want to dive into turns. 3) I believe current owner has mis-routed the throttle cable, as the throttle would stay wherever you left it and it raced the engine if I turned the bars full stop to the right. Keep in mind this test drive lasted all of 90 seconds and didn´t get over 30 Mph. Current owner said a) he´s cleaned the carbs out in an attempt to rid of said sluggishness. He believes the problem to exist furhter down, perhaps top end, perhaps just build-up in the cylinder itself (he referred to the 3rd one). b) he´s never had it inspected/registered (last sticker was from 6/03, previous owner). My question is this: Should I dive in? I am not all that familiar with motorcycles mechanically; I´d rather ride. But I NEED a bike. It has been too long. Is the Katana community supportive of dolts like me logging on every night with new rather newbie questions? I patiently await any and all responses. Thanks in advance. -AV
