I had heard that the KLR has always had a problem with speedometer error. After switching from a Buell to the KLR a few weeks ago it felt to me like to bike was going slower than indicated. I figured this was just the different bikes ergonomics. But I bought a GPS receiver and installed it this week and was surprised to learn that indeed my speedo is reading 10 KMs faster than my actual speed! This error occurs anywhere beyond 70 KMH (40 MPH) A 1-2% error would be acceptable but 10%! I imagine that this effects the odometer as well adding 10 km to every 100 that I travel. It seems strange to me that a Japanese manufacturer, whom I have always assumed builds quality first, has installed such an inferior speedo.
