I just bought a 1999 CBR F4600 and am learning to ride. I took the MSRP course, always wear gear, etc. I´ve been practicing in low traffic streets and parking lots off and on for a couple of weeks (I would go everyday but it´s been raining a lot here in Houston) but here´s my question. I am having trouble - probably a psychological barrier - getting smooth starts from a stop. I can let the clutch out slowly and start without using any throttle but these starts are a little slow in traffic and impossible on a hill. But I´m a little sketched out by giving throttle to start from a dead stop because I don´t want the bike to take off. I end up reving too high (only up to 3-4K rpms, I´m not redlining or anything) with the clutch still in. I think the problem is that I´m afraid to let the clutch out, and I end up throttling down too much because the timing is off. My question is: am I just being a puss? What happens if I rev up to 3-4K rps and let the clutch out? How much room for error do I have? (That is, how much gas can I give before dropping the clutch is risky, leading to a wheelie or the bike taking off like a rocket.) I know, I know. I´m a total wuss. Any advice, suggestions? (Other than "suck it up" or "get a scooter", that is.)
