Review of the 2011 Tomos Streetmate 45

Streetmate 45, 1 year later Review of the Streetmate 45 submitted on 2012-11-16.
My first impressions when receiving a Streetmate, shipped to my home from Tomos´ South Carolina warehouse, was good. I was impressed with the fit and finish and the ease of access to most maintenance items. A few of the wire connections had to be made, but since I was doing the ´dealer prep´ myself, that´s not really an issue.
At about 300 miles, the clutch bell failed, due to bad spot welds. I received a new one from Tomos and was able to be up and running with less than an hour´s work.
This bike has been very reliable, and with a few minor mods to ´de-restrict´ it, performs pretty well. Smaller rear sprocket, venting the air filter box and drilling out the exhaust restrictor makes it possible to reach 40+ mph on this bike.
As with all bikes in this price range, there are a lot of plastics. The fenders and covers and virually all the chrome parts are plastic. This can be problematic, unless the owner opts to add a few washers to disperse the strain to avoid cracking.
All in all, give the price/value ratio, I would have to rate this bike at 9 out of a possible 10.
